Hotel Santa Caterina

Santa Caterina is recognised as one of the world’s leading hotels, perched atop cliffs above Amalfi.

It offers stunning views of Amalfi’s main beach and bustling operational harbour, and exudes classic Italian charm. You may be lucky enough to spot your favourite film star, as it is a favoured destination for many celebrities as they unwind on the Italian coast.

The hotel boasts two exceptional dining venues, and Al Mare, which is located right by the sea, is my personal favourite. Accessible via a glass-front elevator from the hotel lobby to the restaurant level, it provides a truly memorable dining experience.

Monastero Santa Rosa

Perched on the cliffs of Conca Dei Marini, Monastero Santa Rosa is a centuries-old monastery and is considered the birthplace of Sfogliatella Santa Rosa, a delicate pastry crafted by the nuns who once called the monastery home.

This pastry is so revered that locals hold an annual festival to celebrate the delicious sweet. The monastery was transformed into a boutique hotel more than two decades ago when an American woman took on the task of restoring the monastery’s ruins and transforming them into luxury accomodation.

The remarkable restoration boasts 20 guest rooms, a dedicated team of 63 staff members, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and a day spa seamlessly integrated into the ancient walls, accented with enchanting gardens, and a cliffside infinity pool. While the experience does come at a cost, it is an undeniably unique one.

Restaurants

Amalfi boasts a plethora of dining options, making it quite the challenge to navigate the culinary offerings. From quaint local cafes and cozy family pizzerias, to Michelin-starred establishments, there’s a diverse array of choices. While some cater explicitly to tourists, others authentically represent the flavours and traditions of the Amalfi Coast and the broader Campania region.

Dining out in Amalfi is an enticing adventure, and these are some of our favourite local dishes to ensure you experience while travelling the Path of the Gods:

  • Gnocchi alla Sorrentina
  • Scialatielli ai frutti di mare
  • Parmigiana di melanzane
  • Melanzane al cioccolato
  • Cuoppo d’Amalfi
  • Delizia al limone
  • Moscardini con le patate
  • Mozzarella di bufala Campana

Allow me to share some of my personal favourites cafes and restaurants in Amalfi and Conca Dei Marini. I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying lunch, dinner, or coffee and pastries at each of these establishments, and they always deliver a memorable experience. Not only is the food exceptional, but the warm hospitality, inviting atmosphere, and breathtaking views all add to their allure. Certain venues may requires advance reservations, particularly during the busy seasons, while others welcome you to drop in whenever the mood strikes.

Here they are, in no specific order:

Pesce D’Oro – Vettica. Found on the coast road close to Amalfi, Pesce D’Oro has been serving seafood and other classoc local dishes since 1959 and is loved by locals.

Ciccio – Vettica. Almost across the road from Pesce D’Oro is Da Ciccio Cielo Mare Terra or just Ciccio. This venue has been owned and run by the one family since 1911 and serves traditional dishes of the region, crafted by Executive Chef, Marco. Known by locals as a restaurant that deliovers fine dining and service by staff who know and hold their craft in high regard.

Calajanara – Conca Dei Marini. Set above the Emerald Grotto with incredible views of Capo di Conca and all the coast to the west including Capri, this is one of my favourite lunch spots with seating on the terrace under lemon groves. Upstairs is a café and gift shop, offering stunning views. An ideal place to visit before or after a tour of the Emerald Grotto, and offers affordable, high quality dining.

Terrazza Duomo – Amalfi. Set above its namesake hotel in the heart of the Piazza Duomo, this restaurant offers a beautiful setting looking across the vista of the lights of the cathedral and piazza. Chef Salvatore Milano has skilfully crafted a menu of authentic local dishes with his unique interpretations. Perfectly designed for a romantic evening, we highly recommend the Terrazo Duomo for a special occasion.

Le Bonta Del Capo – Conca Dei Marini. This is a great family dining location with incredible views of the surrounding coast. It’s warm, open, friendly, and inviting. Owner Salvatore Criscuolo and his wife Teresa serve a great range of affordable dishes, fabulous wood-fired pizzas, and a really good wine and beverage selection.

Ristorante il Refettorio – Monastero Santa Rosa. This Michelin-star restaurant is located inside the beautiful gardens of the Monastero Hotel. Chef Alonso Crescenzo delivers the best dishes in the Campania region, and the menu is complemented by the views, romantic setting, and curated selection of fine wines. Bookings are essential.

Capo Di Conca – Restaurant, Bar and Pizzeria. This seaside swimming spot offers a distinctively Amalfi experience. The cuisine is delicious and affordable, featuring simple yet flavourful offerings. Sun lounges are available, and a complimentary shuttle service transports guests; along the way, you will be treated to views of the ancient Saracen watchtower ruins, erected centuries ago to safeguard against pirate attacks. You can also arrive by boat and anchor just off the restaurant, which is open day and night during the warmer seasons. This is a place that leaves an indelible mark on your memories. This location is closed during the winter months.

La Piazza da Nino – A quintessential local cheap and cheery trattoria and pizzeria in a beautiful spot on Via Roma in Conca Dei Marini. Nino, the owner, and his family serve simple Italian food and great pizzas for lunch and dinner. In the warmer months dining outside is really a pleasure with the outstanding view of the sea. A great everyday dining place where you’re bound to bump into the locals.

Wandering through Conca Dei Marini along Via Roma, you will stumble across this quintessential, budget-friendly trattoria and pizzeria. Owned by Nino and his welcoming family, it’s a place that captures the essence of authentic Italian dining. Offering straightforward yet delectable Italian dishes and outstanding pizzas, the trattoria is open for lunch and dinner. Dining al fresco in the summer months allows an unparalleled view of the sea, and is where you are bound to bump into the locals.

La Tonnarella – We previously mentioned a charming gem tucked away on the beautiful shores of Spiaggia Della Vigna and Spiaggia Marini di Conca, two of Italy’s stunning beaches. Named after the traditional tuna nets used by Conca Dei Marini’s fishermen, La Tonnarella, have welcomed guests such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Sophia Loren, Princess Margaret, and the former owners of Moet & Chandon champagne, who once had a villa in Conca. La Tonnarella offers unassuming beachside dining, where you can relax with your feet in the sand, perhaps still in your swimwear, enjoying specialties such as Spaghetti e zucchine, Pezzogna all’acqua pazza, or the indulgent Spaghetti alla Jacqueline, all accompanied by a glass of local wine. Today, you’ll be greeted by the two sons of the legendary founder, Umberto Lauritano—Angelo, the chef, and Franco. Whether you choose to climb the 300 steps from the land or arrive by sea, La Tonnarella welcomes you. The restaurant has a boat pick-up for incoming guest boats or you can be dropped ashore by a charter company. (See attached article). For me, a visit to La Tonnarella is essential to fully immerse yourself in the essence of Amalfi.

Villa Cocles: Housed in a renovated 17th-century convent, Villa Cocles offers captivating culinary experiences high above Positano’s Bay.

Ristorante Da Ciccio: Da Ciccio has been family-run since 1911 and has flourished through four generations. Today, Ciccio’s four children manage the venue, each contributing their expertise, from sommelier to chef, to public relations.

La Tonnarella: Once a favourite haunt of Jacqueline Kennedy, Radici del Sud offers panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples, perfect for romantic dinners. Together we will dine on the elegant terrace or within its beautiful dining room.

Caffeteria Il Ritrovo: A haven for authentic Italian flavours, Il Ritrovo tempts with its pastries, gelato, coffee, and light meals, expertly blending culinary traditions.

Ristorante Santa Croce: Set in the picturesque village of Nocelle, Santa Croce offers an Italian dining experience enhanced by the breathtaking Amalfi Coast views.

Ristorante Al Mare in Hotel Santa Catarina: Dine on a picturesque stone terrace at Al Mare, where the Tyrrhenian Sea sets the scene for traditional regional dishes, seafood specialties, and pizzas fresh from a wood-fired oven.

Sea/Boat Charters

Viewing the Amalfi Coast from the sea is essential to appreciate all this stunning region has to offer. While the ferries are convenient and connect to the major villages and even Capri, embarking on a private or group boat charter elevates the experience to something truly magical. Chartering a boat allows you swim in the azure ocean, explore beaches, take long lunches in private coves, and take your time as you discover the magic of Amalfi.

Many boat charter companies offer skippered or self-skippered charters, with a range of sizes and styles from inflatables to Miami Vice-style high-powered cruisers. Unless you’re a seasoned boater, opting for a skippered charter is a relaxed and easy choice, letting the experts handle the anchoring, manoeuvring, and boat-related concerns while you indulge sit back with a wine of beer. The captains are also very knowledgable about the region and can offer local insight, anecdotes, and access to spots only the locals know.
